So one of my favorite pastimes is finding awesome flash games online. Over several years I’ve been bookmarking my favorite flash games– and here they are, broken down by category. Most of the games I enjoy fall into a couple categories: Tower Defense, Strategy, Platformer, Action-Adventure, Creative, Puzzle/Thinking, Dark Humor (though, I’ll admit, my categorizing is probably a little hit or miss). If you enjoy these types of flash games, then you might want to bookmark this page right now, as I list A LOT of good games here.

Please share this page if you like this page and feel free to mention your favorite games in the comment section at the bottom.

Tower Defense Games

Tower Defense (Defence) Games or TD games are games where your goal is to stop an enemy from making it across the map or page while they travel on a (mostly) fixed path. Tower Defense Games are typically a cocktail of real time strategy with a dash of action and RPG elements.

1
Kingdom Rush

Game Type: Tower Defense, Real-Time Strategy, RPG Elements

Description: So you are a king or a general (or something), defending your kingdom from some evil from Mt. Doom (or something). Well, nevermind the story, the gameplay is excellent. Kingdom Rush is overall just an excellent TD game. This game revolves around 4 tower types, (Archers, Mages, Artillery and Footmen), and upgrading those towers becomes essential– plus, when you upgrade it increases the strength of the tower AND changes the look/graphics which is always fun. The most notable thing that differentiates Kingdom Rush from other games is the attention to detail and the overall graphics/gameplay polish. Also, I really enjoyed how the Footmen towers actually send out men to fight/stall the enemy. It certainly feels more like an involved battle with the use of hand to hand fighters in the game. Kingdom Rush also has perhaps the best graphics/audio of any flash game I’ve ever played. The graphics are clean and vibrant and the audio is interesting, and sounds professionally mastered. There are also plenty of little stage-specific interactive elements in the game which did not go unnoticed (at least, not by me). The one downside is that the game isn’t very long. With about a dozen stages, an experienced player should be able to best this game in about 2 hours. Like many modern flash strategy games, the game makers do have “premium content” which I imagine would include more stages, but you have to pay.

2
Don’t Touch My Gems

Game Type: Tower Defense, Real-Time Strategy, RPG Elements

Description: Don’t Touch My Gems is a pretty straight-forward but addictive TD game. This one has you take the role of some kind of evil-being who uses towers to defend his precious gems from human seizure. The gameplay revolves mostly around 3 different environment-based towers (Orcs for woodland, Undead for Tundra and Demons for Rocky Mountains/Hell). This Game also features a bunch of stacking tower upgrades which add to both your developing skill and replay value.

3

Gemcraft

Gemcraft: Chapter Zero, Gem of Eternity (2009)
Gemcraft: Lost Chapter: Labyrinth (2011)

Game Type: Tower Defense, Real-Time Strategy, Strong RPG-elements

Description: These three games, (with a fourth in development), are pretty much the gold standard of modern tower defense games. If you like tower defense, and have not played these, you now have no excuse. These games are long, involved, polished and most importantly, a lot of fun. Consider yourself an expert at tower defense? These games wont disappoint, the designers clearly put effort into making each map a unique challenge. Adding to the challenge is all the variables you will be faced with, from different speeds/strengths of enemies, to map limitations on what types of gems you can use. Some levels will be difficult because of one unexpected elite wave, others because of order/combination of waves, and others still because of the difficulty of maps layout. These games are easy to learn, but difficult to beat, and you may find yourself going back to old stages in attempts for either badges or leveling. Did I mention there are skills and leveling? Yup. Brightly colored gems, bombs, tombs, upgrades, speed runs, different gameplay modes– What more could you want? Long game, lots of replay value and a real test for beginning and experienced TD gamers. For the record, they were released in the order I listed them in above. However, Chapter 0 occurs before Chapter 1 (and Chapter 0 has a lot of gameplay improvements over their first game– so you can play that first without an issue). Labyrinth plays a little differently than Chapters 1 and 2, but is equally as good (maybe better in a few ways).

4
Bowmaster Prelude

Game Type: Tower Defense, Real-Time Strategy

Description: Well, this game is not a typical tower defence game, but you do have a tower you are defending… so… good enough? Honestly though, this game is fantastic. You are a commander/archer in your castle and your job is to both shoot down the enemy as they come to take your flag and to send your forces to get the enemies flag. The game often comes down to how well you can cover and support your troops with arrow fire as they approach the enemy flag. What makes the game excellent is the variety of enemy, (some of which are VERY tough), and the variety of arrows and spells and upgrades. For instance, there is nothing better than placing an exploding arrow right into the center of an enemy unit at the perfect moment or bringing down an ice monster with a fire arrow to its face. Graphics can be a little crude compared to the other games on this list, but overall are decent. My final suggestion would be that you might want to turn on some of the easier arrow aiming settings (in “Shooting Styles” in the options) if youre using a laptop or want to play more casually. Note: Dont Select A Fraction when game loads– thats some spammy nonsense from the programming. sigh.

5
Desktop Tower Defense 1.5

Game Type: Tower Defense, Real-Time Strategy

Description: Desktop Tower Defense (1.5) places you as defender of your desktop. With a variety of different hand-drawn towers, and different creeps coming to break through your desktop defenses. One interesting factor in this game is that not you not only do you decide what types of towers to choose, but you also choose where on the desktop to place them– effectively blocking the creeps from moving in that square. Making barricades, mazes and even traps becomes a big part of the gameplay and adds a new dimension to how to play. If you build a good defense, enemies will have to zig-zag all across the board before getting to the other side. What might be the most fun though, is the challenge modes, including the “100 level” challenge. My best is up around 80 levels, let me know if you can top that.

6
Vector TD

Game Type: Tower Defense, Strategy

Description: This game combines bright colors, disco-like flashing lights, rave music and tower defense strategy into one attractive package. It’s both straight forward, and a very addicting challenge. What makes the game most dynamic are the bonuses you get every 5 waves: more interest on your money, more lives, a range amplifier or a power amplifier. These bonuses let you craft exactly how you will be victorious– and since the enemies get exponentially harder, that wont always be easy. Wonderful game, though I’ve never been able to beat the extreme maps on the original version. Definitely recommend playing the original first — but if you’d like, you can also find versions X and version 2 which are also fun and sport some predictable upgrades (like more enemies and difficulty tweaks).

Dark & Creative Thought Games

I define “Dark & Creative Thought Games” as being games which have a “dark” element in the way of an underlying creepy, eery feeling or story, or games that require outside the box, creative thought. Additionally, I will try to keep the descriptions a little more brief so as not to ruin any surprises.

Game Type: Action, Puzzle & Strategy

Description: I’m not sure these two games fit in this section, but I’m not sure where else to put them. They are dark-ish action/puzzle games. Both games are great and revolve around creatively thinking about how to beat each area– it starts easy and gets increasingly difficult and creative. This one will definitely require some serious outside the box thinking. Luckily, there’s always a hint <-- Just like that.

8

Exit Path

Exit Path (May 2010)

Game Type: Dark Platformer (Action)

Description: Exit Path is your standard cross between Portal and Track & Field… yea. Your job in this game is to navigate through different environments which are filled with traps and various doom. Spikes, pits, spinning blades, axes. Not only that, but you’re asked to clear areas as quickly as possible. The game is fun and has tons of replay value since there are both achievements, wearable items to collect and a fully functional multiplayer mode. You’ll almost undoubtedly play through at least a couple times just to see how good a time and score you can get. Additionally, the multiplayer is TONS of fun as you race others to beat maps. Exit Path 2 is a longer and more graphics polish… but I cant help but feel Exit Path 1 had more difficulty and strategy involved and is ultimately a better game. Both are excellent, though.

Game Type: Platformer, Strategy/Puzzle

Description: This one is strange, but fun. Puzzle/Platformer with an interesting twist and an intriguing storyline. This game has one of the better stories in this list and the game does a good job of slowly immersing you. This game is creative, challenging and interesting– a must play if you like strategy and 2D platformers as its certainly one of the more creative platformer games you’ll ever play.

Game Type:Creative, Action-Puzzle

Description: This game is mysterious and creative. It will likely get you scratching your head a little. Is it the matrix of video games?
Description: Small Worlds is all about discovery. It involves you exploring through a pixelated worlds. I think this one would be more enjoyable to those who like to use their imagination, and just explore. I showed this game to one friend who asked “this is a game?”, and another who said “this is awesome”. Anyway, I liked it and I hope you do too.

Description: A creepy action/shooter game. You are a man (in a top hat) who crashed his hot air balloon (yes, a hot air balloon) in an unforgiving wilderness. Luckily, there are enough supply trucks to allow you to arm yourself to the teeth and build a nice shelter. Still, you have to repair your balloon before you are overwhelmed by evil creatures and whatnot. If you like defense games and action games– this game is worth a play through.

Description: Yea… the tower is hardly lucky. Just saying. Anyway, this game involves a little bit of strategy, a little bit of action/adventure and a lot of luck. You’re stuck in a tower filled with monsters and traps and your goal is to… escape or survive probably? Maybe save the princess, I’m not sure. In the tower you are often presented with a series of doors to go through– be sure to pick the right door. Luckily, you get as many tries as you’d like and the game saves at each new screen.

Game Type: Side-View Defense Shooter, Strategy, with Action Elements

Description: This game has Strategy, Defense, Action and RPG elements and is rather complex. Your mission is to defend your castle from daily onslaught by a horde of random attackers. Inbetween waves you have AP (action points) to spent on a variety of things ranging from throwing a party to mugging people. The game is complex because there are a myriad of classes, weapons, upgrades, and items for you and your comrades. How you spend your cash and AP is essential to preparing yourself for future waves of enemies. This game is actually so complex, (and cool), that is has both a fan base and a wiki site dedicated to it. If you like defense games and strategy, this is a must play. I recommend starting with a class whose default weapon is the crossbow (goes through multiple enemies and is easy to aim on a laptop). My record is Day (level) 72.

Game Type: Zombie Survival, Simcity, Strategy

Description: Welcome to Sid Mier’s Civilization 8: Zombie Apocalypse Edition… just kidding, though thats not a bad idea really. Your goal here is to grow your burgeoning post-zombie apocalypse republic by clearing zombies from adjacent properties and expanding your nation in a way that helps you satisfy a victory condition. Decent simulation for running your own society post zombie apocalypse. I will say though, it can get a little repetitive after awhile. I found myself just ignoring the text 90% of the time after playing for a little while. I would suggest that experienced gamers up the difficulty from the get go– normal will be too easy for you.

Game Type: Real-Time Strategy, with Action-Elements

Description: Civilization wars is an RTS game where your you control bases which slowly build up power over time. You can then send half of that power, (represented in soldiers in this game), from your bases to take over either neutral ruins or enemy bases. What makes this game a little more unique than others like it are three things: 1. Graphics and Theme, 2. Magic and Upgrades and 3. Boss Monsters. The Graphics and Theme are cool because you take over one of three ancient tribes– including an aztec style tribe, a roman style tribe and an asian style tribe. Additionally, the graphics are clean, bright and fun. Magic and upgrades just add an additional strategic element to the game which can make or break your performance. My favorite thing about this game is the “bosses” though. There is simply nothing more fun then sending waves of soldiers up against a giant octopus monster who is upset with you.

Description: Unlike the other games on this list, this is not a flash game, it’s downloadable freeware for the PC. I Wanna Be The Guy (IWBTG) is a fantastic game– but is also probably the hardest game you will ever see. The game is a parody/port/reinvention of classic NES platformers. IWBTG draws from classics like Mario, Metroid, Tetris, Ghosts and Goblins, Zelda and more. It draws from them by directly using concepts, graphics, music and even characters from them. The game IWBTG undeniably draws from the most is Mega Man though, so if you’re a fan of the classic blue bomber titles, you really have to give this game a shot. The controls are excellent, the graphics are good, the music is great, and the challenges are complex and intricate. With that said, Ignore everything I said prior to this and DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME. All joking aside, this game is REALLY hard and should not be taken on lightly. If you are not a classic gamer and excellent at platformers, this game is not for you. If you have never heard of Mega Man 2, then this game is not for you. If you have ever complained about the difficulty of Mega Man 2, then this game is not for you. Finally, if you value your joints and want to avoid carpel tunnel disorder, then this game is not for you. Play at your own risk… and not for long spans of time. If you do decide to try out IWBTG, set it to “easy”– trust me.

Well that concludes my list for now! I may add more games as I find them or a followup post with new games eventually. Let me know what you think below!

Here’s some rough video of how the CMYK Car looked before/after each step in the process transitioning it from the Sharpie Art Car to the new CMYK Car. Sorry for the lack of quality– the video was kind of an afterthought in the grand theme of things as far as this project was concerned. In retrospect, it would have been worth the extra effort to record the repainting live. Lesson learned, and in the future, I will record the whole process as it happens.

There seems to be an interesting relationship between local artists/designers and local video game shops in upstate NY (specifically, Albany NY and Binghamton NY). local video game shops seem to put a real premium on art and on hiring artists and designers to make their shops look unique and to add unique flare to their shops… and why not? In an industry with iconic figures like Mario, Master Chief and Donkey Kong– there is no shortage of amazing artwork that could be crafted for these shops. I know this personally because I had been doing work for Pastime Legends, a video game shop in Albany NY, as well as indirectly for Sound Go Round in Binghamton NY. This week I’d like to highlight two local artists for game shops and also critique/review Pastime Legends Video Games in Albany, NY for a slew of bad behavior after the jump!

Since I mentioned cool connections between artists and game shops, might as well take this moment to highlight two cool video game stores (one in Albany and one in Binghamton) which have especially good artists behind the scenes:

Albany Game Shop

A good local game shop in the Albany area</stong> which has a lot of custom art is Jay Street Video Games in Colonie Center and Crossgates Mall. They might have more locations opening soon– I always love stopping in to check out some of their new custom artwork.

Some of their awesome art:
Artist: Alec Acevedo

Binghamton Game Shop

Sound Go Round not only carries video games, they also carry movies and music in addition to a good collection of accessories, check them out at: Sound Go Round.

Lets play: Is it plagiarism?

I designed a logo (among other work) for Pastime Legends (which has the shops in Albany and Scotia). We agreed on a price for the design, but I was never paid (this of course didnt stop them from using the logo though). I then asked them to remove the unpaid-for logo from their stores and their Facebook page. They responded that “they own it” because “I designed it for [them]“. So, I replied “you have to actually pay me to own it”. They refused to take down the logo and even recommended I sue them if I didn’t like it. Fun.

Then, a couple weeks later they had a “new” logo designed for them:

My Logo Design:

Their “New” Design:

When I confronted Pastime Legends owners (Joe Pirro and Emily Petrequin) about the new logo, I was told that they owned my logo, (again, without paying), and that I should just go away or they would take legal action against me for placing the designs I created for them on my art portfolio site (this site). As in, they were saying that I, as an artist, had no right to display, (as part of my portfolio), any designs which had their company’s name on it. They added: if I went away, they would *let me* continue to keep the graphics, (which, again, I designed), on my website. What a nice offer, eh? But thats not all! Joe Pirro, decided to sweeten the deal — and informed me that “[he] was doing me a favor” by “even talking to [me] about it”. What a guy right? That’s a pretty good offer.

UPDATE 12/22/2011: A month ago I received formal U.S. copyright on the logo and today received word today that Facebook and Google will comply with my takedown requests. Its a shame a better solution couldnt be found, but at least this matter is finally resolved.

That response has prompted me to finally break ways with them and write the following warning/review/critique about Pastime Legends Video Games:

Pastime Legends Video Games Review / Critique

Obviously, I have an insider perspective of Pastime Legends operations, as I had worked closely with them for about a year. Given that they have blatantly stolen my work, and that we have been unable to work out some of our differences, I suppose I have a bit of a bias– but I will try to remove my personal bias and report objectively on what I feel is bad behavior by the owners and the business towards customers and their competitors.

Review Summary
Customer Service: F
Customer service at Pastime Legends Video Games varies depending on who is working there, but more times then not employees are rude and unprofessional and service is routinely slow during high traffic periods.
The Vibe: D
The vibe at Pastime Legends also varies depending on who is working there, but several employees give off a stuffy and presumptuous attitude. The Scotia store often has young kids in it and appears to be managed by high school students, which could be good or bad depending on your personal preference.
Store Layout: B
The stores are small and thus somewhat cramped. The store art is kind of cool– though sometimes kitschy. Their local competitors seem to put a greater emphasis on custom art, but its definitely better than a GameStop in this regard.
Prices: B-
Prices are generally okay– mostly the cost online + $1-5. Some items are too high, but on the whole they are not terrible. However, trade values are often lousy, and the Pastime Legends employees try to “read people” to minimize payout. Buy there if you find a good deal, but definitely trade elsewhere.
Selection: C+
Selection on older games is fair to good, selection on next gen stuff is often poor as they buy new games in very small doses to minimize cost. They bring in 1-3 copies of new games in at a time, so they are often out of stock. They do make the extra effort to try to have games at release though.
Other: F
Unethical behavior– both with how they handle trade ins and returned goods and their local competitors. Additionally, often repairs or special orders take forever– for no good reason. It’s often just that the owners forget to handle things, some repairs Ive seen take upwards of a year, most of that time waiting for the owners to drop off the system with the repairman.

Overall Final Grade: C-, Not Recommended.
If they replace management and improve on customer service it might turn out to be a good place to shop. But as is, its often dramatic and with mixed, but usually poor, customer service which outweighs any good points of the stores.

For more specific details, read on…

Pastime Legend’s Rude & Unprofessional Conduct
Answering cell phones in front of customers who are waiting for service, replying to customers with attitude or arguing with customers about store policies– you name it. If you confront the employees about their behavior, (which happened occasionally), you will get either denial or defensiveness from the employees and especially the owners. Additionally, The owners of Pastime Legends have tremendous problems keeping their personal lives separate from their store– leading to incredibly inconsistent customer service and management from them. One day the Pastime Legends owners, respectively, might be the nicest people on earth and the next day they will bark at you for asking when a game is coming out. Bottom-line: What you need to understand is that Pastime Legends is doing YOU a favor by letting you shop there… or at least that’s the feeling one often gets. Bottomline: Customer Service is inconsistent and often unprofessional. At times they do a fair to good job, but often if you need service or want to chat expect to feel unimportant.

Pastime Legend’s Trade-in Ethics
Ever wonder why Gamestop has low trade values? Well, part of it is that it’s Gamestop– but the other part is that Gamestop actually does have a lot of overhead. From TV ads, to building and maintaining large stores and their executive management– they have costs. Pastime Legends has no such overhead– I know for a fact that their stores are very inexpensive to maintain with unusually low rent, they pay their employees minimum wage and their insurance and other costs are pretty insignificant for their business. Plus, on used games Pastime Legends makes 60-90% profit on average. Those are HUGE profit markets regardless of industry, and yet often they offer only a dollar or two for games they resell for upwards of $20 and $30 (or more). Gamestop makes a fraction of the profit margins that Pastime Legends makes, but the owners would argue “well, we [pay out] more than Gamestop, so we are a good deal”. Not really, everyone is more than Gamestop– and Pastime Legends is no exception. They use the fact that Gamestop has extremely poor trade values in their favor and use it as the rationale for why they are only offering 10-30% of what they sell items for. They could and should offer better values– but dont because they dont have to. Normally, you’d see a business like this and go “they are a ripoff”, but Gamestop gives them cover. When one shop offers you 5% value, and another offers you 10% for a game– the 10% shop is the better deal, right? Well, yes, but neither is really a good deal when you remember that many used games typically get 75%+ of their market value in online auctions– in fact, the “values” pastime legends bases their low-ball trade value percentages on are what the games are ACTUALLY selling for online (seen here). So it’s insane that Pastime Legends Video Games offers so little for video games that could easily be sold for 2-5 times more online. So where does that extra money go? The owners. That’s capitalism for you, and theres nothing wrong with that, but people should be aware of that. Bottomline: Ultimately, Pastime Legends owners are at least as greedy as Gamestop. They often try to create the illusion of fair prices by comparing to Gamestops inflated prices.

What’s even worse about their trade-ins is that they routinely “read people” in order to minimize trade payout (aka screw people) to those who are either desperate for cash or dont know what they have. I’ve watched older folks trade in a stack of valuable games that their children owned, only to be offered small amounts ($10-$25) for stacks of games, meanwhile the retail value of those stacks of games often turned out to be worth hundreds (especially when there were RPG’s in the mix which could be worth $30+ individually). “Unethical” is all I can say about that. To have one set of trade prices for people who know the value of the games they have and another set for those who dont know what they have? Its capitalism again– but it’s the kind of capitalism you see at pawn shops and unscrupulous corporations NOT honest mom and pop stores. If you give indicators that you really need the cash, they will likewise keep their trade values low. I remember one instance when one of the owners said after someone left “He was going to accept whatever I would have offered him, so no sense in offering more than I needed to”. Name of the game: Maximize wealth for the owners– ie. no different then a big bank, a pawn shop or a corporate conglomerate. Bottomline: They will try to “read you” in order to pay out as little as possible for trade ins.

Paranoia & Sleazy Competition
As many of you may know, there is a standing feud between Pastime Legends Video Games and Jay Street Video Games. The origins of it, I dont know or understand. But on the Pastime Legends side of the equation, the owners are paranoid and obsessed that Jay St. is out to get them and as a result they often suspect and blame criticism of their operations as a conspiracy by Jay Street. Bad review online? It was Jay St! Complain about Pastime Legends customer service? You are probably friends with Jay St! Meanwhile, while complaining and blaming others, the owners of Pastime Legends also give tacit approval of underhanded business practices like sending in friends of theirs to put Pastime Legends business cards, (the ones I designed, sadly), on their competitors store shelves. Bottomline: Fairly or unfairly, the owners seem to do their share of mud-slinging towards their local competitors.

Final Thoughts: Pastime Legends Video Games
It would seem that the owners sudden and unexpected success has more or less gone to their heads. They feel invincible and that attitude has created a poisonous environment which has negatively affected customer service and created an environment where there is no accountability for poor customer service. Combine these problems with their questionable business ethics and I think you are really not far of from the dynamics that exist at many of the more unscrupulous pawn shops or large corporations. Pastime Legend’s owners are fortunate that they are in a business where their profit margins are so high because I would be shocked if a business run like theirs could ever survive in a more competitive industry/niche. My dad once told me “at small shops like that, customer service and professionalism is usually either REALLY good… or REALLY bad.” Smart words.

So I use elegant theme theme’s for some of my websites. They make a solid, easy to use product.

However, one problem I noticed is that some (or all?) of their themes (like Simplepress and Lightbright) seem to use this Cufon font/text stuff. Cufon font is a text replacement script that switches out whatever CSS/HTML font family you might be using with another font on the fly during page load. Sounds great, right? Ability to load custom unique fonts??– Sweet! Not so fast. Cufon fonts have one very noticeable design flaw and is at this time a dated technique that should no longer be used. The main problem with cufon is that you can actively SEE the font switch occur during load. As in, you load the page and all the font is in Arial (for example), and then after a moment, the font switches to the Cufon replacement font. Fix after the break.

Why Cufon Sucks

So you’ll see the page load once, and then load a second time with the new font– which causes things to move all about with the new font size parameters. To make matters worse, this will happen every time you reload a page or go to a new page– its not a one off or just first load kind of thing. So you’ll have plenty of time to start to notice that it wasnt your imagination the first time as you go from page to page. Basically, it looks tacky, very tacky. The switch is usually pretty quick, at about .2-.5 seconds. however, sometimes the font replacement can take several seconds which REALLY looks lousy. Im not sure why elegant themes hasnt diabled Cufon in their older themes or at least added an option to turn off Cufon for ALL of their themes– but they should.

The Better Option: Google Web Fonts

Google web fonts is clearly the future for web based fonts– it quickly loads once and is done, has 200+ fonts to use, is free and is very easy to implement. I suggest “WP Google Fonts” plug-in to implement Gfonts on a WP site. Read more about Plug-ins I recommend here.

Turning off Cufon in E.T. themes:

You can turn off Cufon in theme settings– but only for some of the themes. If there is no “disable cufon” type option within the e-panel then you have to find the “script.php” file in the include folder within the theme directory. That file should have a cufon call command that looks something like this:

Cufon.replace(‘h5′)(‘h6′,{textShadow:’1px 1px 0px #fff’})(‘h6′,{textShadow:’1px 1px 0px #fff’})(‘#quote div span’,{textShadow:’1px 1px 0px #fff’})(‘#blurbs div span.titles’)(‘h5′)(‘.hover span’,{textShadow:’1px 1px 0px #fff’})(‘.fn’,{textShadow:’1px 1px 0px #fff’});

Once you find this cufon call command– just comment it out. That should disable cufon fonts in whatever theme you are using.

If this fix doesnt work, leave me a comment and ill try to find a fix for whatever E.T. theme you are using.

Okay, so you have your WordPress blog or site all set up… and now it’s time to add some plug-ins… and that’s really one of the great things about a CMS engine like WordPress, the plug-ins. Below are my favorite 9 WordPress plug in’s and what they do– all of these I have used and strongly recommend for their respective purposes.

Ive sorted these plug-ins into three sections: Website Functionality, Back of House Coding and Back of House Non-Coding. hopefully you find something new to use in your next site!

Back of House Coding Plug Ins:

1. Specific CSS/JS for Posts and Pages

This plug in is a MUST install for nearly ANY website or blog. It allows you to easily add internal/page specific CSS (or JS). Makes it very easy to overrule external without having to write a ton of inline commands– no brainer.

2. Browser specific CSS

Just call this one a huge time saver. Ever notice that a plug in or element on your site doesn’t load right in Internet Explorer 6, 7 or 8? Well, this plug gives you a simple set of classes that will impact specific browsers (like IE) with CSS commands. So for instance that widget that doesn’t load right in IE7? .ie7 { CSS adjustment } and DONE. It’s literally that easy. A must for any web designer looking for IE compatibility and making an effective cross browser website.

Non-Coding Back of House

3. Simple Page Ordering

Couple this with the next plug in on the list, and consider your time saved. Simple page ordering allows you to drag/drop WordPress pages up and down on the pages page to order them.

4. CMS Page Order

This page order plug in lets you drag and drop AND set parent/child hierarchy of the pages. Why install this AND simple page ordering? Well this one you have to be on a “page order” screen and the other one is more on the fly on the main pages screens. So why not just have them both?

5. Exclude Pages

Quickly exclude certain WordPress pages from site navigation. Simple, easy and useful.

Site Functionality (front of house) Plug Ins

6. Q and A (FAQ Page)

The simplest and possibly best implementation of a Q and A (FAQ) section I’ve seen for a site. It lists your questions, and then you click them and the answer smoothly fades in below (pushing the other questions down a bit) and disappears upon clicking the question again. Way better than the FAQs that send you way down the screen. This can also be used just for sorting information into an accordion like structure and has categories you can set to have multiple FAQs/Accordions on your site.

7. Login-Logout

Its a very simple “login” button that you can throw into your widget bar. Very small, hardly noticeable. Nice if you’re looking to create a discreet login in your widget area.

8. GetSocial

Getsocial is one of the better social sharing widgets I’ve used… which is saying a lot considering how many there are. It can create an adjustable vertical floating or static set of share buttons– including a Google Plus One, (which is still missing from most other social networking plug ins), and even space for custom buttons. Getsocial does require some tinkering to get it to look right on your site– but the options are easily available to do just that. Getsocial does have some quirks, and what I would consider a bug with the Google plus one display width– which may or may not give you problems depending on your use of Getsocial, I have a simple solution here for the Google Plus One width issue.

9. WP Google Fonts

You know when you see a website with text title logo that’s actually an image? They did that because the designer thought that to have a unique font– you need an image. That is no longer true and don’t let that be you. These days almost ANY look can be achieved with a font with Google Web Fonts. The value of having actual text instead of an image of text is clear on so many levels (size/looks/SEO etc…). Use this plug in to quickly and painfully adjust certain tags (like H1, H2 etc…) to use a specifically Google Web Font. The plug-in both loads the font from Google and overrides existing font-family tags to make the web font the first font used. First and foremost though, go bookmark the Google Web Font page as you’ll be depending on that to choose the fonts you want in WP Google Font.

Thats a wrap, if you have a plug-in you would like to suggest, please leave a comment.

Im currently in progress on a video game review of Battle Kid (NES) made by a nice young man named Sivak. I’ve been playing the game on and off with my friend Ian and should have the game beat shortly and the review will probably be live within about a month.

I’ve also been commissioned to work on their new logo– which I hope to put together in August.

Thanks to TheDan for inviting me to contribute to the site.

Just thought I would briefly talk about the CSS function “z-index” (For those unaware, its basically layer level or order in which objects sit on top of each other on the screen).

Here’s a useful visual example of Z-index:

Anyway, I was having a really hard time getting an image (a logo, specifically) to sit behind a text description, but on top of a background image.

1. DESCRIPTION
2. LOGO
3. BACKGROUND IMAGE

I set my z-index according… and nothing. I thought for awhile it had to do with WHERE I put the image in the string of HTML elements. Perhaps all the elements had to be in the same id group? Nope. Finally, I popped over to wc3schools.com (great resource for designers/coders btw) and began to read how z-index works… and still didn’t see what i was doing wrong. It *SHOULD* be doing what I want. That was, until i read this little gem: “Note: z-index only works on positioned elements (position:absolute, position:relative, or position:fixed).”

Wait. a. second. I wonder if… yup. My description had no positioning information (which defaults to static). Added position: relative to my description, refreshed and BAM everything snapped into proper place.

Ah-ha! Probably an issue with z-index web design people run into everyday, but Im happy to know how to solve it next time.

On Saturday my dad asked me to build him a website ahead of flyering for his business. He told me he was flyering early next week and that he needed the website up by Tuesday (aka, about 3-4 days)

So after putting in about 8 hours a day for the last 3 days, we have a basic website with paypal ordering. Its nothing special right now and could probably use some images and some improvements/debugging. However, given the quick turn around, Im really pretty happy with it. You can take a look here: Tuckers Laundry Service.

Quick plug for my Dad: Tucker’s Laundry Service provides pickup/drop off laundry service for students of RPI (in Troy, NY) and Union College (Schenectady, NY).
